Size:

Woman's small (medium, large, extra-large, 2X-large) instructions are given for smallest size, with larger sizes in parentheses. When only 1 number is given, it applies to all sizes.

Finished Measurements:

Chest: 36 (40,44,48,52) inches
Length: 20 (21, 22,22, 23) inches

Materials:

• Worsted weight yarn* (207 yds/ 100 g per ball): 5 (7,7,8,9) balls vanilla #100
• Size 6 (4mm) straight and 16-inch circular needles
• Size 7 (4.5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
• Cable needle (cn)
• Stitch markers
• stitch holders
• 4x7mm pony beads*: Approx 170(170,170, 200,200) #2838-ZE-001; holes must be large enough to fit over 2 strands of yarn
• Size 6 (1.8mm) steel crochet hook or size with hook to fit through hole in beads

*Sample project was completed with Cotton-Ease (50 percent cotton/50 percent acrylic) from ion Brand Yarn Co and Deads from Westrlm Crafts.



Gauge:


28 sts and 34 rows = 4 inches/10cm across 2 cables and 1 garter st panel with larger needles
18 sts and 26 rows = 4 inches/10cm in St
st with larger needles
To save time, take time to check gauge.


Special Abbreviations:
 
  • T3R (twist 3 right): SI next st onto en ,rid hold in back, knit next 2 sts from LH needle, then pi from cn.

  • T3L (twist 3 left): SI next 2 sts onto cn and hold in front, purl next st from LH needle, then k2 from cn.

  • T5RP (twist 5 right purl): SI next 3 sts onto en and hold in back, knit next 2 sts from LH needle, then place purl st from en back onto LH needle, p1, k2 from cn, being careful not to twist.

  • T5LP (twist 5 left purl): SI next 3 sts onto en and hold in front, knit next 2 sts from LH needle, then place purl st from en back onto LH needle, p1, k2 from cn, being careful not to twist.

  • B1 (place bead on st): When you reach the st that receives the bead, slide the bead of your choice onto the crochet hook. Using the crochet hook with the bead on it, lift st off the lh needle purlwise, and slide tie bead down over the st. Place this st on tie RH needle, being careful not to twist fie st. (This is a st slipped purlwise that acquired a bead during the slipping.)

Pattern Notes
Markers can be placed before and after pattern stitches for ease in working cable patterns.
Charts are included for those preferring to work from charts. On chart, read odd-numbered (RS) rows from right to left and even-numbered (WS) rows from left to right.
 
Back
With larger needles, cast on lid (124, 134,148,158) sts. Change to smaller straight needles.
 
Ribbing
Row 1 (WS) : K17 (22, 27, 19, 24), [p2, K1, p2, k10] 5 (5,5,7, 7) times, p2, k1, p2, k17 (22, 27, 19,24).
Row 2: K14 (19, 24, 16, 21), [p3, k2, p1, k2, p3, k4] 5 (5, 5,7,7) times, p3, k2, p1, k2, p3, k14(19, 24, 16,21).
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures approx 2 1 / 2 inches, ending with Row 1.


Beg pat
Row 1 (RS): Change to larger needles, k14 (19, 24, 16, 21), [p2, T3R, pi, T3L, p2 (RTC), k4] 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) times, |p2, T3R, p1, T3L, p2 (LTC), k4] 2 (2, 2, 3, 3) times, p2, T3R, p1,T3L, p2(LTC), k14(19, 24, 16,21).
Row 2: Working Row 2 of cables, k14 (19, 24, 16, 21), [LTC, k4] 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) times, [RTC, k4] 2 (2, 2, 3, 3) times, RTC, k14(19, 24,16,21).
Continue to work in established pat, rep Rows 1-12 of LTC and RTC panels, until back measures approx 1216 (13, 13 1 / 2 , 13 1 / 2 , 14) inches, or desired length to armhole; ending with Row 6 of cables.


Shape armhole
At beg of next 2 rows (Rows 7 and 8 of cables), bind off 7 (9,11,10,13) sts. (100, 106,112, 128,132stsrem)
Dec 1 st at beg of each row until 74 (88,88,96,96) sts rem, then work even until armhole measures 6 1 / 2 (6 1 / 2 ,6 1 / 2 , 7, 7) inches from armhole bind-off.
 
Shape back neckline
After completing a WS row, place center 32 (38, 38, 40, 40) sts on a holder and 21 (25, 25, 28,28} sts for left back shoulder on separate holder.


Right back shoulder
Dec 1 st at beg of each
WS row (neckline edge)
until 17 (20, 20, 24, 24) sts rem. work
even until armhole measures 7 1 / 2 (8, 8 1 / 2 ,
8 1 / 2 , 9) inches. Place sts on holder.


Left back shoulder
Place 21 (25, 25, 28, 28) left back shoul­der sts on needle and dec 1 st at beg of each RS row (neckline edge) until 17 (20, 20, 24, 24) sts rem. Work even until arm-hole measures 7 1 / 2 (8, 8 1 / 2, 8 1 / 2 , 9) inches. Place sts on holder.


Front
Work same as back until armhole mea­sures 5vs (6,6,6,6) inches above under­arm bind-off.


Shape front neckline
After completing a WS row, place center 28 (32, 32, 34, 34) sts on a holder; place 23 (28, 28, 31, 31) sts of left front shoul­der on separate holder.


Right front shoulder
Dec 2 sts at beg of next 2 (3, 3, 2, 2) WS rows (neckline edge). (19, 22, 22, 27, 27 sts rem)
Dec 1 st at beg of each ws row until 17 (20, 20, 24,24) sts rem. Work even until armhole measures 7 1 / 2 (8, 8 1 / 2, 8 1 / 2 , 9) inches. Place rem sts on holder.
 
Left front shoulder
Place 23 (28,28,31, 31) left front shoul­der sts on needle, dec 2 sts at beg of next 2 (3, 3, 2, 2) RS rows (neckline edge). (19, 22, 22,27, 27 Sts rem)
Dec 1 st at beg of each RS row (neck­line edge) until 17 (20, 20, 24, 24) sts rem. Work even until armhole measures 7 1 / 2 (8, 8 1 / 2 , 8 1 / 2 , 9) inches. Place rem sts on holder.
 
Sleeves
With larger straight needles, cast on 76 (86,96,106,116) sts.
Change to smaller straight needles.
 
Ribbing
ROW 1 (WS) : K13 (18, 23,13,18), [p2, k1, p2, k10] 3 (3, 3, 5, 5) times, p2, k1, p2, k13 (18, 23,13, 18).
ROW 2: K10 (15, 20,10, 15), (p3, k2, p1, k2, p3, k4] 3 (3, 3, 5, 5) times, p3, k2, p1, k2,p3, k10(15,20, 10, 15).
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures approx 2 1 / 2 inches, ending with Row 1.

Change to larger needles.

Continue even in pat until sleeve mea­sures approx 6 1 / 2 ( 6 1 / 2 , 6 1 / 2 , 7,7) inches from beg, or desired length to armhole, ending with Row 6 of cables.


Shape sleeve cap
At beg of next 2 rows bind off 7 (9,11, 10, 13) sts. (70, 76, 82, 96, 100 sts)
Dec 1 st at beg of each row until sleeve cap measures 6 1 / 2 (7,7,7 1 / 2 , 8) inches.
Bind off all sts.
 
Assembly
Bind off front and back shoulders, using 3-Needle Bind Off, page 71.
 
Neck band
Rnd 1 : With smaller circular needle, RS facing, beg at left shoulder, pick up and knit 19 (22, 22, 25, 25) sts evenly along left front neck edge, sl center 28 (32, 32, 34,34) sts from holder to needle and knit across, pick up and knit 19 (22, 22, 25, 25) sts evenly along right front neck edge, 7 (7,7,8,8) sts along right back neck edge, si center 32 (38, 38, 40, 40) sts from hold­er to needle and knit across, pick up and knit 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) sts along left back neck edge, join to work in rnds. (112,128,128, 140,140 sts on needle)
Rnd 2: Purl
Rnd 3: Knit
Rnd 4: Purl
Rnd 5: Knit, dec 6 (7, 7, 8,8) sts by k2tog, concentrating decs at side fronts, side backs, and shoulder areas of band
Rnds 6-8: Rep Rnds 2-4
Rnd 9: Rep Rnd 5.
Rnd 10: Purl
Rnd 11: Knit, dec 2 (2, 2, 4, 4) sts.
Bind off purlwise.
 
Finishing
Sew sleeves into armholes, easing any extra sleeve cap length into top half of sleeve. Sew side and sleeve seams. Block if desired.
